• Who is required by HMRC to file a Self Assessment return?

About 10 million taxpayers must file a Self Assessment return, and these include:

Partners in commercial partnerships; solo proprietors; self-employed individuals with taxable income over £1,000.
Directors of limited businesses, employees making more than £100,000, people getting over £2,500 from renting out real estate, people subject to chargeable gains when selling stocks, real estate, or other assets, and those making more than £10,000 from savings and investments.

In addition, self assessment returns are needed from higher earners claiming Child Benefit, foreign workers who live abroad but get income in the UK, trustees, and taxpayers who failed to pay enough taxes the year before.
