Search Engine Optimisation, otherwise known as SEO, has evolved over the years from a dark art, to a mixture of online PR, technical web development and content marketing. It also overlaps into social media marketing, as ‘social signals’ are also believed to be a ranking factor that Google takes into account.
Google also looks at the quality of content on each website, and the number of relevant links, pointing to each site. A great way to build links is to create a content asset that is authoritative, helpful and/or entertaining, and ‘outreach’ it to relevant websites and blogs. Ness Gardens for example have recently created a great infographic by inviting bloggers to share their favourite botanical cocktail recipes. Asking bloggers to contribute to an asset is a great idea as they are likely to link to, and socially share the asset as well; giving it greater ‘SEO value’.
Other ideas in terms of assets for content marketing, include eBooks, podcasts, videos and presentations. Whatever the asset is however, it is important to know exactly who the target audience is, and who is going to share the asset before work begins on it. Some niches and industries are easier to tackle than others in terms of content marketing. It’s very difficult for example to make an asset relating to accountancy interesting and shareable, whereas a paintball company may find it a lot easier.
If you do create an infographic, make sure to submit it to visual.ly – this website will provide a ‘do-follow’ backlink and can potentially get the infographic in front of lots of eyeballs, and increase the chances of it gaining more links and shares. Consider reformatting content – for example making an infographic into a blog post, and/or into a presentation or even a podcast. If you make a presentation, be sure to upload it to slideshare.net to begin with.
Content marketing is great for brand exposure and also can add SEO equity to your website by gaining backlinks and social shares. Moreover, if an asset is branded, it can be great for online PR and brand recognition too.
