INTERIOR DESIGN TREND-SPOTTING IN 2020:
Ever wondered how designers and organisations forecast design trends?
Forecasting trends can largely sometimes rely on instinct and experience. Your brain is constantly making subconscious observations of subtle patterns, shape, line, form and texture. Consistently perceiving design movements, technology and life shapes our predictions as to what the future may be, as they become our eventual subtle ‘norms’. Our interactions with people, places, work, technology become the fabric of our everyday life and shape environments. Trends are sometimes born out of necessity, cultural, global influences and a re-thinking or advancement of our current way of life. 2018 & 2019 immersed us in colour statements and expressions dominated by social media buzzwords like: ‘millennial’ pink and ‘ultraviolet’. We saw a huge rise in hand-crafted materials like wicker. Sustainability became the ethos of several brands and is still driving the design agenda today.
We take a look at 2020 and what has shaped the design language and movements of this year.
CURVATURE

Curved lines have been literally everywhere in 2020. Furniture design has been embraced by soft fluid lines made particularly desirable by utilising materials such as beautiful dark velvet’s and suede. Angles and perpendicular shapes which dominated 2019 have been long forgotten. Standout designs have come from Italian furniture pioneers Baxter, we adore the colour palette used by Baxter: whom have taken classic colours such as Aubergine and turned them into softer mire subtle luxurious shades.

‘Millennial pink’ has had it’s moment. Neo-mint was one of the dominating shades of 2020, a fresh and invigorating tone, linked to modernity and technology and the future. Neo-mint appears genderless and offers the possibilities of mixing it with many colour accents and colour combinations. Neo-Mint can transcend spaces with its cool and energised vibe. The versatility of Neo-mint was refreshing to the landscape of interior design as we have seen this shade in every interior space from residential settings, commercial and lifestyle venue settings.

The term ‘experimental rug’ is on the rise, we have seen everything from sculptural shapes to collaborations with unusual materials and technology. The company leading this edgy term is CC Tapis the Milan based rug company whose latest collection ‘spectrum’ selects artists whose portfolios explore materials, shapes and form that are as unique as their designs. For this collection they have collaborated Bethan Laura Wood and with one of our favourite designers Patricia Urquiola. The clever marketing campaign behind the launch has been as unique as the collection itself featuring local newsstands draped with rugs.
STREET STYLE

Contemporary street style has been of recent heavily showcased on Instagram and has been the combination of colour pop designs with a creative urban twist aimed at the younger generation. This hipster eclectic style pokes fun at life and features design thinking outside of the box. One of the most standout brands is Italian company Seletti , closely followed by Qeeboo and Karman. Their designs are considered art for the home. Unconventional in their thinking and reflected in their designs which combine modern themes with past traditions. Take for example Queeboo’s ‘Giraffe in love’ light which takes a lovable giraffe holding a chandelier. Seletti’s Banana lamp went viral all over social media, these designs reflect not just the conventional but the emphasis all about attitude.

SENSORY LIGHTING

We adore exclusive lighting brand Preciosa whom unveiled ‘Pearl Wave’ – a breath-taking chandelier comprising of more than 700 handmade triplex opal spheres. The interactive chandelier reacts to ‘happiness’ by coming to life upon glasses being cheered in a toast! Louis Poulsen’s statement piece at Salone Del Mobile was a large-scale pendant light set to be an exploration of complex mathematical geometries by the brilliant artist Olafur Eliasson. The light is composed of two shapes, an aluminium outer layer in the shape of an icosahedron and a complex inner layer that is a dodecahedron. It has a complex form and is perceived differently depending on where the viewer stands to view the complex sculptural light. Creating infinite perspectives that make the light come to life.
METAL MAGIC

Metal progression as a furniture material has seen exponential growth. Leading brands like Ghindini and Scarlet Splendour have unveiled simply stunning collections that embrace the full splendour of metal. The ‘Mio, Bio and Trio’ lights by Ghindini use brass as a single material, whilst ‘Take Me To Miami’ collection features metal furniture with exquisitely highly polished surfaces. Nika Zupanc’s latest collection for Scarlet Splendour sees “strings” metal transformed into furniture using delicate strings being cast in steel and defined into cabinets and credenzas. The stories behind the furniture are as exciting as the pieces themselves.

Skin tones have become colour palettes for branding, interiors and fashion statements as we embrace and celebrate diversity and humanity and our unique differences. Baxter have executed this with excellence, elegance an perfection with everything from rustic outdoor pieces with earthy textures colours and vibes, expressing a vivid and memorable re-definition of luxury inspired by mother nature.
