Hiring employees for your business is a sign of growth and something that should be celebrated. However, it can be a discouraging process. You must therefore be prepared to ensure that you have made a good decision and hire the right people.

  • Know what you want

Before you sit down and write a job specification, ensure you know what you are looking for in a new hire. It’s not just about thinking what they can do for you now. To set the right foundation of successful future growth, small business owners should think long term.

  • Culture

Take some time to think about what you would like your Company culture to look like. The impact one person can have on the overall culture of a Company is much bigger than a business with hundreds of people.  If a new employee, no matter how talented doesn’t share your Company culture or values, it will cause severe disruption and productivity problems.

  • Getting started

Majority of small businesses do not have a large budget to hire an internal recruitment workforce and may invest in job board/job site or work with a recruitment agent.

What’s the difference?

A job board/jobsite will usually charge a reasonable set price to promote your position on various websites and social channels. Depending on the position, you may or may not receive high volumes of CVs.

A Recruiter will typically charge a % of a set salary. They will learn and understand what you are looking for and manage the recruitment process for you. A good recruiter will present around 3 profiles that will match your job specification.

Either option has been successful for new small business owners and it all depends on how much time and budget you have.
