'BACK TO SQUARE ONE'

'BACK TO SQUARE ONE'

Do you know where the phrase 'back to square one' originated from?

In this day and age it means to go back to the beginning and start from scratch, usually after a plan or strategy has gone wrong. - I can imagine everyone has used this phrase before?

Lets shoot back one hundred years to around the 1920s. English sports fans had no choice but to listen to the football on the radio. Shocking I know, but the early commentators would help guide the listeners with a visual aid by dividing the pitch into eight imaginary numbered squares - as you can see from the diagram above.

This diagram appeared weekly in the Radio Times which was a very popular entertainment magazine and started in 1923 and some people might still buy it today? God knows who, but it's available to buy.

Anyway - When a team was pushed back into their own half, and especially when the ball was passed back to the goalkeeper, the commentator would inevitably say, 'Well Gentlemen, we're back to square one'.

I always enjoy finding the original meanings or such phrases and some really do take you by surprise, but to my actual point which some of you may say has nothing to do with the story really.

If you're finding yourself at 'square one' with your insurance needs and not sure where to even begin, drop me a message and I will always be happy to guide you in the right direction.

Whether it be for personal protection or for your business, I'm your guy.

The advice I give is completely free of course!

Thank you
